SAS and SATA Controller Cards (non-RAID)
- IBM M1015
Cross-flashing an IBM M1015 to make it think that it's an LSI Logic
9211.8i in Initiator Target (IT) mode with the P16 firmware and no BIOS
bootup delay (i.e. without the "option ROM" firmware), so that it can be
used in FreeNAS 9.3 hopefully. See here
for my guide to setting up your ZFS pool, and why to choose ZFS
mirroring for your pool (in preference to any of the other ZFS
redundancy features).
Hard Drives
FireWire cards
- The SYBA Model SD-PEX-FWB
PCI Express 1394 FireWire cards use the Texas Instruments TSB82AA2
chip, and provide two 1394b (800Mbps) and one 1394a (400Mbps) FireWire
ports. Work OK in Ubuntu Jaunty. Update: unreliable with more recent
kernels, Lucid and Maverick give occasional apparently-random
disconnects and resets.

eSATA cards
- Untested (the one I got was dead, didn't even show up in
lspci
): The ADSA3GPX8-4E-4PORT uses a SiI 3124 chipset. Reading here, it uses libata's sata_sil24 driver, and Silicon Image provided Garzik with docs and sample hardware.

Ubuntu on Dell
Ubuntu Has Arrived By Popular Demand
-- Dell are listening to their customers, and are now offering Ubuntu
pre-installed. How's that for convenience? Although Dell are clearly on
the right path, they appear to be somewhat confused about the details:
for the desktop system, the video card is unfortunately still not
supported by Ubuntu (proprietary drivers are required, as it's an nVidia
card). Also, the description of the operating system for the desktop
system as "Ubuntu with DVD playback" instead of simply "Ubuntu with an
additional proprietary package" should be better explained. The picture
included alongside the description "Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio" is
also confusing, as it looks remarkably like a separate Creative Labs PCI
card.
